Thermographics

Through the analysis of selected case studies, we will learn how to detect and interpret atmospheric conditions in public spaces and how to distill design principles that leverage, mediate or amplify them.

Atmospheres in motion

The workshop is part of an ongoing investigation on the role of atmosphere and its meteorological characteristics in relation to the urban space and architecture. During one week, we will focus on the space in-between buildings, theater of the constant motion of air and particles. Through the analysis of selected case studies, we will learn how to detect and interpret atmospheric conditions in public spaces and how to distill design principles that leverage, mediate or amplify them. The integration of atmosphere in the design process is hard to grasp when compared to tangible, physical elements. Technological advances, however, make it possible to scan the space through the specialized lens of a thermo graphic camera and allow us to evaluate properties that would be otherwise invisible. Standing on the expertise of the Institute for Architecture and Landscape we will then work on the representation of such dynamics and the effect they have on the public spaces they entangle. Finally, to successfully represent the dynamics discussed we will include the dimension of time by animating our drawings in a GIF format. Students will learn a new way of looking at the city, one that combines technology with sensorial experience and that includes natural processes as essential components of urban living.
