Paradise Found
The Institute of Architecture and Landscape takes the opportunity to explore an extravagant alternative to mass production of food: one that is both healthy and guilt-free; one that allows the ingredients of our exotic taste to be grown locally in communities where such plants would not naturally grow. Automatically, such cultivation in the landscape demands an artificial infrastructure. The technological innovation and cultural precedents in designing the necessary microclimates is readily available, and there are ample opportunities to tap into the rich flows of energy used to sustain the needs of our contemporary society.

Guernsey (UK)
Guernsey, a small island of roughly 80 km2 (see: Figure 2), is examplary for this particular condition in Europe, and is therefore an ideal site to test new design principles during the integrated design studio. While it geographically lies just off the coast of France, it is politically dependent on the English crown. Due to its relatively constant temperate climate, the island is known for its rich horticultural tradition. While the specific expertise is still readily available today, many greenhouses are left unused as the region is unable to compete with other European regions.
Countryside
"The countryside is now the frontline of transformation. A world formerly dictated by the seasons and the organisation of agriculture is now a toxic mix of genetic experiment, science, industrial nostalgia, seasonal immigration, territorial buying sprees, massive subsidies, incidental inhabitation, tax incentives, investment, political turmoil, in other words more volatile than the most accelerated city. The countryside is an amalgamation of tendencies that are outside our overview and outside our awareness.
